Power Factor Correction

Power factor correction by synchronous motors
In Transmission System we need a  low power factor means  Greater  Load current . That means I2R losses is too much high in all the equipment like generator , transformers and also in transmission lines.
That's effect low efficiency of operation an also a poor voltage regulation of transmission line and generators.
That will effect the all the electrical equipment attached with that line like bulbs, fans,, induction motors etc.
Thats why we need this low power factor close to unity that will make a efficient operation of all this electrical equipments

Synchronous motor when operated in overexcited mode then then it will operated at leading power factor. it can also operate at unity power factor by increasing the excitation voltage
Ef by adjusting field current supply .
A synchronous motor which increase the power factor without mechanically connected is called Synchronous Condenser
Its installed at the receiving end of supply line with static capacitors.

Synchronous condenser is motor which designed with large  field current .By this motor there is no nay mechanical output and no shaft excitation. But Due to required of large filed current its needs great amount of copper and large cross sectional area of filed poles than ordinary motors.
